Kath started shopping with us after an accident left her with life-changing injuries which meant she was no longer able to work.

“I’ve been shopping at the community groceries for the last few years and it’s made a real difference to me and my family. It’s a lifeline if you’re on a tight budget, it gives you a bit of breathing space when things are hard financially.

At first I was a bit nervous about coming because I thought people would judge me, but everyone was so friendly and welcoming and I was treated with dignity and respect.

I wouldn’t have felt comfortable going to a food bank, I like being able to pay my way and choose the things I want myself. And the added bonus is that I know I’m helping to stop perfectly good food from going into landfill.

But to me it’s about so much more than just food – it’s about community, friendship and support which are just as valuable to me as the food that I buy.”
